Effect of turmeric oil and oleoresin on cytogenic damage in patients suffering from oral submucous fibrosis.

Patients with precancerous oral lesions (for example, oral submucous fibrosis) show increased numbers of micronuclei (Mn) in exfoliated oral mucosal cells and circulating lymphocytes. Administration of an alcoholic turmeric extract to oral submucous fibrosis patients relieved their symptoms and lowered the incidence of Mn relative to that of healthy subjects. This study, which included both in vivo and in vitro experiments, investigated the decreased incidence of Mn in oral mucosal cells and circulating lymphocytes when treated by turmeric oil (TO), turmeric oleoresin (TOR) and turmeric extract (TE). Both TO and TOR gave significant protection against chemically induced increased Mn in vitro, similar to TE (previous study). In vivo studies showed TOR to be significantly more effective in reducing the number of Mn compared to TO and TE. Both TO and TOR act systemically on target cells such as oral mucosal cells, conferring chemoprotective activity against chemically induced DNA damage in vitro. Hastak K, Lubri N, Jakhi S, et al.
