New legislation could shape functional foods market.

The Nutraceutical Research and Education Act (NREA), if passed, could significantly alter the competitive dynamics of the market, according to a study by Front Line Strategic Management Consulting, Inc. The study concludes that the NREA creates an exclusive category within functional foods in which companies, using clinical research, could promote a direct health benefit claim for marketed food products. In addition, companies would be granted 10 years of exclusive marketing rights to their claims. Executive summaries of all Front Line studies are available to the press, and tables of contents and sample pages are available to industry. Just-food.com, May 3, 2001.
